Indian Ecommerce Platforms Launch AI Storefronts for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Gemini

Gate News message, April 27 — Indian ecommerce platforms Flipkart, BigBasket, Ajio, and FirstCry are building AI storefronts for ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google Gemini to support agentic commerce, where AI tools shop on behalf of users. Quick commerce firm Swiggy has also built connectors for ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini. The push accelerated after payments on large language models were enabled in February. Razorpay is testing the flow with 15 to 20 merchants through UPI Reserve Pay, a UPI tool that lets users set spending limits for specific purposes. The infrastructure uses the Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, a standard that allows AI agents to connect with payment systems and initiate transactions without traditional APIs or dashboards. BigBasket noted that grocery shopping is well-suited to AI agents due to recurring order patterns. While OpenAI, Perplexity AI, and Google Gemini already offer agentic commerce in the United States, the service is not yet available in India. Separately, Visa announced it is opening access to a production MCP server to enable developers to connect AI agents to Visa Intelligent Commerce APIs.

ByteDance Net Profit Drops 70% in 2025 as AI Spending Surges

Gate News message, April 21 — ByteDance's net profit fell by more than 70% in 2025 as the company significantly increased spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure and development. Overseas revenue rose nearly 50% compared to approximately 20% growth in China, increasing its share of total revenue. TikTok Shop, the company's e-commerce platform, drove much of this growth with gross merchandise value expanding nearly 70% last year. The net profit figure was calculated under international accounting rules that include employee stock option costs. ByteDance spent approximately $20 billion on capital expenditure in 2025, with most allocated to AI infrastructure. The company plans to spend 160 billion yuan (approximately $22.7 billion) in early 2026 to further expand AI capabilities. Operating margins declined in the second half as Douyin e-commerce growth slowed and investment in newer businesses increased. Additionally, TikTok Shop faces policy headwinds as governments tighten duty-free rules for low-value parcels, with the European Union ending the exemption in July 2024 and the United States announcing plans to do the same in September 2024.

I recently noticed a quite interesting phenomenon: Wall Street's prediction markets and meme traders in the crypto community are actually sniffing out geopolitical trends earlier than traditional media. This time is no exception. Earlier this year, a meme coin called Pentagon Pizza Watch suddenly skyrocketed, with a 78% increase in one week and over $110k in 24-hour trading volume. On the surface, it seems like a silly joke, but what does it reflect behind the scenes? It’s that ancient intelligence tool known as the "Pizza Index." Some may find it hard to believe, but this method indeed has historical roots. As early as the 1990s, pizza shop owners in the Washington area discovered a pattern: whenever pizza orders near the Pentagon surged, it usually signaled that the U.S. was brewing a major move. In August 1990, the CIA ordered 21 pizzas in one night, and the next day Iraq invaded Kuwait. Later, the Panama operation and Desert Fox in Iraq followed this pattern. The logic is simple: during crises, high-level officials and military personnel need to work for over ten hours straight, and pizza, being cheap and convenient, naturally becomes the first choice. Now, there are dedicated websites that monitor pizza shops near the Pentagon in real time, including Papa John’s and Domino’s. Earlier this year, orders at these stores skyrocketed, with increases ranging from 150% to 1250%. The most dramatic surges were at the stores closest to the Pentagon. The 1250% figure is nearly twice the 700% increase seen just before the Venezuela operation. And the timing is spot on. The Venezuela raid happened at the beginning of the year, and just hours before the operation, Papa John’s was already unusually busy. This actually reflects that the U.S. military had begun large-scale deployments in the Caribbean as early as August last year, with about 15,000 troops already stationed there—marking the largest military buildup in the region in decades. Interestingly, the Trump administration dubbed this series of actions "Tangroism," essentially a modern upgrade of Monroe Doctrine. They have publicly stated that America’s dominance in the Western Hemisphere is unquestionable. According to official and senior officials’ statements, the next targets could include Greenland, Cuba, Colombia, and even Iran. Prediction markets are the most sensitive to these signals. On Polymarket, the probability of "Trump controlling Greenland by 2027" jumped from 7% at the end of December to 14%, with trading volume surpassing $2.1 million. Predictions for military action in Cuba show a stepwise increase: 2% at the end of January, 8% at the end of March, and 20% by year’s end. For Colombia, the forecast is even more aggressive: 3% at the end of January, 7% at the end of March, and 15% by year’s end. These predictions are not baseless. Rubio warned that Cuba "got into big trouble," Trump openly said Colombia is "sick," and threatened Iran with "severe strikes." The prediction market even estimates a 54% chance that Iran’s top leader will be ousted within the next year. Interestingly, responses from these countries vary. Colombian President Petro has been very firm, announcing that any commander who prefers the U.S. flag will be dismissed. The Cuban government held a national mourning for 32 officers killed in Venezuela, clearly making the worst-case scenario preparations. From the Pizza Index to prediction markets and meme coin speculation, the entire market ecosystem is pricing geopolitical risks in its own way. That seemingly absurd pizza index has now become a signal more sensitive than traditional intelligence agencies.

Just got back to India and I gotta be real about something that's been on my mind. Spent the last few days paying for everything through UPI - the instant payment system that's basically everywhere here now. Scanning QR codes at street vendors, paying restaurants through phone numbers, the whole thing. And honestly? It's so smooth that even as someone who's deep into Bitcoin, I can't pretend Lightning is anywhere close to competing right now. Here's the thing - UPI has completely dominated because it just works. Over 14 billion transactions monthly across more than 450 banks, zero fees, money hits instantly. Everyone from tiny shop owners to major merchants accepts it. Meanwhile, Lightning still has liquidity issues, channel management is a pain, and the user experience is clunky even with custodial solutions. I'm not exaggerating when I say most Indians would rather deal with UPI than wrestle with a Lightning wallet. India also has other digital payment rails like IMPS and NEFT for different use cases, so there's already this whole ecosystem people trust. The government-backed infrastructure is deeply embedded. And yeah, the privacy trade-off is real - you're basically surrendering your financial data to centralized systems. It's the kind of thing that should bother everyone more than it does. But the convenience factor wins every single time here. I genuinely don't see mass adoption of Bitcoin Lightning for everyday payments in India happening anytime soon. The incentive structure just isn't there yet. People are comfortable, the network effects are massive, and honestly, Lightning still confuses most Bitcoiners let alone regular folks. Maybe if currency devaluation becomes severe or privacy concerns finally hit mainstream consciousness, things shift. But that's down the road. For now, UPI has won the payments game in India. The momentum is real, the adoption is real, and competing against that with current Lightning UX is fighting an uphill battle. Bitcoin circular economies might work in niche communities, but mainstream? Not happening in the near term.
