Indonesia's political efforts in facing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz (as of April 2026) focus on active diplomacy and mitigating the impact on national energy. The government remains committed to the principle of an independent and active foreign policy to avoid direct bias while protecting economic interests.
Here are some of the main political efforts undertaken by the Indonesian government:
Intensive Bilateral Diplomacy with Iran: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs conducts intensive negotiations with the Iranian government to ensure the safety of Indonesian ships. As a result, two Pertamina tankers, namely VLCC Pertamina Pride and the Gamsunoro vessel, received permission or a "green light" to pass through the strait despite Iran implementing selective closures against Western-flagged ships.
Support for Ceasefire: Indonesia officially welcomes the ceasefire efforts between the United States and Iran. The government encourages all parties to respect the sovereignty of other countries and to restore stability in the Strait of Hormuz for the sake of global trade.
Energy Resilience Mitigation: President Prabowo Subianto instructs the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources to seek alternative oil supplies from various other countries to anticipate dependence on the Strait of Hormuz route, which supplies about 20% of the nation's energy imports.
Position as a Mediator in International Forums: Through regional and international forums, Indonesia collaborates with neighboring countries such as Malaysia to call for an end to military actions in the Middle East. President Prabowo also engages in diplomatic communication with regional leaders, including Saudi Arabia, to maintain global stability.
Strengthening Maritime and Economic Strategies: The government is reminded by the DPR to remain vigilant about economic impacts, such as fluctuations in oil prices and the rupiah exchange rate, and to strengthen national maritime strategies so as not to rely solely on international routes vulnerable to conflict.
