I just came across some data on the wealthiest cities in China, and it’s pretty interesting. A lot of people think Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen are absolute winners, but the per capita income rankings are actually quite surprising.

Shanghai and Beijing really have locked in the top two spots, with per capita incomes of 88,300 and 85,000 respectively—there’s nothing unexpected there. But the rankings after that start to get interesting. Shenzhen, even though it has the strongest tech strength—Huawei, Tencent, BYD, and DJI are all there—has a per capita income of 81,100, placing third. Guangzhou, Suzhou, and Hangzhou are right behind, with per capita incomes all in the 77,000 to 78,000 range.

What surprises me most is the two provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu. Hangzhou, as the capital of Zhejiang, had a per capita income of 76,700 last year, but second-tier cities like Ningbo and Shaoxing also reached 75,000 and 72,900 respectively. In Shaoxing, the private economy is especially well developed; the owner of Nongfu Spring and Jack Ma are both from Shaoxing, and that background really helps explain why this city is so wealthy. Ningbo is even more impressive—the world’s largest port is there. Oil from the Middle East, iron ore from Australia, coal from Indonesia, and U.S. soybeans all have to pass through Ningbo Port to enter the Chinese market, and its industrial output value ranks in the top ten nationwide.

So you’ll find that the truly richest city in china isn’t just Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen—these cities in Zhejiang and Jiangsu are also quite strong. For college students who want to find high-paying jobs, these ten cities are indeed the best choices. Whether you’re doing tech, trade, or finance, there are opportunities everywhere.
