So finally, the Tren Interurbano México-Toluca, 'El Insurgente,' was inaugurated last year. After nearly 12 years of construction, President Claudia Sheinbaum opened the last 8.4 kilometers connecting Santa Fe with the Metro Observatorio station. Basically, the train runs a total of 58 kilometers and connects the Toluca metropolitan area with the western part of CDMX.
If you want to know how far the Tren Interurbano México-Toluca goes, the route includes seven stations: Zinacantepec, Toluca Centro, Metepec, Lerma, Santa Fe, Vasco de Quiroga, and Observatorio. Trains run approximately every 10 to 15 minutes. It operates Monday to Friday from 5 a.m. to midnight, Saturdays from 6 a.m. to midnight, and Sundays from 7 a.m. to midnight. The last train departs at 11 p.m. from Zinacantepec and at midnight from Observatorio.
Fares depend on how many stations you travel through. A trip of one station costs 15 pesos, two or three stations 20 pesos. After that, the price increases: between Santa Fe and Observatorio, you pay 25 pesos; longer trips range from 60 to 100 pesos if traveling from terminal to terminal. The reach of the Tren Interurbano México-Toluca is quite affordable, so if you're traveling between Toluca and the capital, it's an interesting option.
To enter, you need the Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada (TUMI) or a QR code, which is personal and non-transferable. You can't use the same Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada for two people. You purchase the ticket at the kiosks in each station and scan the Tarjeta de Movilidad Integrada at the turnstiles when entering and exiting. If you lose the TUMI, there is no refund, so be careful.
