Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially when it comes to banking info and phone numbers. Let me break this down because it's different depending on which grant you're on.
If you're getting a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do it online—you have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. You'll need to fill out a "Payment Method Change Form" and bring your ID (original + copy) plus proof of your new bank account. The bank statement needs to be recent (not older than 3 months) or get an official letter from your bank. Important thing: the account must be in YOUR name only, no joint accounts. Once they submit it, the bank takes up to 21 working days to verify, and if you want it to take effect next month, you need to submit before the 15th.
Now, if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier because it's all online. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal and update your banking details there directly. They'll send you an SMS link to verify everything, and the new account also has to be in your name. The change takes a few days to a couple weeks to process.
For updating your phone number on SRD, same thing—use the contact details portal on the official site. You'll need your ID and application ID, then they send you an OTP to confirm. Just make sure you're using the real official portal, not some random website claiming to help you change your grant details. There's a lot of fraud out there.
If the online stuff doesn't work, you can always call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit an office in person. It might take longer but it's safer for complex changes. Basically, check which grant you're on first, then follow the right process—don't waste time trying to do something online if it needs to be done in person.
