So I had this weird thing happen where my number kept showing as private on every call I made, and honestly it drove me crazy. People would just not pick up, and when I finally got someone on the line they were like 'why do you always call private?' That's when I realized something was actually wrong.
Turned out there were a bunch of reasons this could happen. Sometimes it's just a setting you accidentally toggled in your phone, other times your carrier is blocking it, or there's some privacy app getting in the way. The annoying part is finding where to actually fix it because Android and iPhone handle this stuff differently.
On Android, you basically need to go into your Phone app settings and look for something called Caller ID or Supplementary services. Different phones put it in different spots - Samsung does it one way, Google Pixel another, Realme another. The idea is you're telling your network to show your actual number instead of hiding it. If that doesn't work, you might need to use those USSD codes like *31# which talks directly to your carrier network.
For iPhone it's simpler in theory. You go to Settings, find the Phone app section, and toggle on 'Show My Caller ID'. But here's the thing - if you have multiple lines or eSIM setup, you gotta do this for each line separately or your number will still show private on some calls.
If none of that fixes why it says private number, then it's probably a carrier-level issue. You might need to reset your network settings completely. On Android that's in Settings under Reset options, and on iPhone it's Settings > General > Reset Network Settings. Fair warning though - this wipes your saved WiFi passwords and Bluetooth connections too.
Other stuff that can cause this: old SIM cards don't always play nice with newer networks, some privacy apps have permissions deep enough to hide your caller ID, and international roaming can mess with the signal. I'd start with the basic settings first before doing a full network reset. Usually that's enough to get your number showing up properly again.
