Just realized a lot of people still don't know how to properly update their SASSA account details, especially with December payments coming up. Thought I'd share what I learned because honestly, the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office and fill out the Payment Method Change Form. Bring your original ID, a copy, and recent bank statement or letter from your bank showing the account is in your name only. They won't process joint accounts or third-party stuff. The whole thing takes up to 21 days after they send it to the bank, so if you're changing your banking details, try to do it before the 15th of the month if you want it to work for the next payment.

Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's actually easier because it's all online. Go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure SMS link. You update your banking details through that link, and same rule applies – account must be in your name. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify.

For updating your cellphone number on SRD, use the contact details page on the portal. You'll need your ID and application ID, then they send an OTP to verify. If the online thing doesn't work, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 or visit an office. Honestly, for complicated stuff, going in person is usually more reliable even if you have to wait.

One thing – make sure you're using the official SASSA website. There's apparently a bunch of fake sites out there trying to scam people. Stay safe with your account updates.
