Just realized a lot of people don't know how to change their SASSA payment method properly. Been seeing questions about this on timelines, so figured I'd share what I learned.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), here's the thing - you can't just do it online. You gotta go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your SA ID (original and copy) and proof of your new bank account - basically a bank statement from the last 3 months or a letter from the bank saying the account is active and in your name. They'll give you a form to fill out, and then it takes about 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Important part: the account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything.
One tip that matters - if you want the change to take effect next month, you need to submit it before the 15th. Miss that and you're waiting another cycle.
For the SRD R370 grant, it's different. You can actually update your payment details online through the official SASSA SRD portal, which is way faster. Enter your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you update your bank details from there. Takes a few days to weeks for verification though.
Also, if you need to change your cellphone number - definitely do it properly through the official channels, not some random website. For SRD, use their contact details portal. For permanent grants, just call 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. Seen too many people fall for fake sites trying to scam grant info.
Anyone else had to deal with this? The wait time is annoying but at least once it's sorted you're good.
