Just realized I need to update my SASSA account number and banking details before the next payment cycle hits. Spent the last hour figuring out the process, and honestly, it depends on what grant you're getting.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't do this online—gotta visit your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your valid SA ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months works), and fill out their Payment Method Change Form. Fair warning: they won't pay into joint accounts or third-party names, so make sure the account is solely in your name. Takes up to 21 working days to process, and if you're submitting after the 15th of the month, you'll have to wait another cycle.

But if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier—everything's online through their portal. You just enter your ID number, they send you a secure SMS link, and you update your account number from there. Takes a few days to weeks for verification. Same rule applies though: account must be in your name only.

Also need to update your cellphone number? For SRD, use their contact details page and they'll send you an OTP to confirm. For permanent grants, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. Heads up though—there are fake SASSA websites out there, so always use the official portal.

Anyone else just done this? How long did the account number update actually take for you?
