Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly change your SASSA banking details, and honestly it's been causing them payment delays. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), here's the thing - you can't do it online no matter what. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office and fill out a Payment Method Change Form. Bring your original ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account - either a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank. Important: the account has to be in your name only, no joint accounts. Once they process it, allow up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. If you want it to work for next month's payment, submit before the 15th of the current month or you'll wait another cycle.
For the SRD R370 grant though, it's way simpler - everything's online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, click it, and update your bank details from there. Takes a few days to weeks for verification. Same rule applies though - account must be in your name.
About changing your cellphone number - for permanent grants, call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit your local office. For SRD, there's an online contact details page where you enter your ID and Application ID, add your new number, they send an OTP to verify, done. One heads up: there are fake websites pretending to be SASSA, so always make sure you're on the official portal.
Truth is, a lot of payment issues happen because people don't update this stuff properly. Takes maybe an hour to sort out but saves you months of hassle.
