Just realized a lot of people are struggling with updating their SASSA grant details, especially when it comes to changing banking information and phone numbers. Thought I'd share what I found because it can actually be pretty straightforward if you know the right steps.
So here's the thing - if you're on a permanent grant like old age or disability, you can't just do it online. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account (a bank statement not older than 3 months works). They'll give you a form to fill out, process it, and then it goes to the bank for verification which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it active for the next payment cycle.
But if you're on the SRD R370 grant, it's way easier - you can actually change your banking details online through the official SASSA SRD portal. Just enter your ID number, they send you a secure link via SMS, and you update your bank info from there. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify though.
For phone number changes, same logic applies. Permanent grants need an office visit or you can call 0800 60 10 11 for help. SRD grants let you update it online through their contact portal - you'll get an OTP sent to confirm it's really you.
One important thing: make sure whatever account you're using is solely in your name. SASSA won't pay into joint or third-party accounts, so don't even try that route. And yeah, be careful of fake websites - always use the official SASSA link to protect your info. Has anyone else had issues with this process? The wait times can be annoying sometimes.
