Just found out that keeping your SASSA grant payment info updated is super important, especially with the December dates coming up. Let me break down how to actually do this without getting stuck.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you can't just change your banking details online - you gotta go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Bring your SA ID (original and copy), plus proof of your new bank account. They want a stamped bank statement from the last three months or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name only. No joint accounts, no third-party stuff. Once you hand in the Payment Method Change Form, they send it to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to kick in for next month's payment.
Updating your phone number for permanent grants? Same deal - visit the office or call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 and they'll walk you through it.
Now, if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 relief), it's way easier because it's all online. Head to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your 13-digit ID number, and they'll send you a secure SMS link. Click it, add your new bank details, and you're done. Bank verification takes a few days to a couple weeks though. Same rule applies - the account has to be in your name only.
For changing your phone number on SRD, use the contact details page on the portal. You'll need your ID and Application ID, then enter the new number. They send an OTP to verify it. If the online thing isn't working, just call SASSA directly or swing by your local office.
One last thing - watch out for fake SASSA websites trying to scam you. Stick to the official links only. And if you're using the cash send option, your phone needs to be RICA-registered in your name.
