Microsoft CEO Brad Smith said on Tuesday that in order to build data centers in the United States, it has become crucial to obtain approval from local communities. Across the country, protests against data center projects are increasingly growing in towns and cities.

The rapid expansion of data centers by tech giants is driving up the United States’ power demand and electricity bills, and has prompted close attention and scrutiny from states and local communities.

Speaking at a Cambridge Energy Week event in Houston, Smith said: “To build it (a data center), you have to earn the support of the local community and continue to maintain their trust. It’s clear that today in the U.S., people are concerned about issues related to data centers.”

In recent months, multiple towns and counties in the American Midwest and Northeast have voiced opposition—citing concerns about rising electricity prices, impacts on water resources, and pollution brought by supporting power infrastructure—leading to the cancellation of several data center projects.
