Got questions about updating your SASSA details? Here's what you actually need to know if you're getting either permanent grants or that SRD R370.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), forget about doing this online. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your original ID and a recent bank statement (not older than 3 months) or a letter from your bank. They'll give you a form to fill out, and then it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything. Pro tip: submit your request before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
The SRD grant is different—it's all online, which is actually way easier. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they'll send you a secure link via SMS. Click it, enter your new bank details, and you're done. Just remember the account has to be in your name only, not joint or anything like that. Takes a few days to a few weeks for verification.
For updating your phone number, permanent grant holders should call the SASSA helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office. With SRD, there's a dedicated contact details page where you enter your ID and new number, then they send you an OTP to verify. Pretty straightforward.
One thing though—make sure you're using the official SASSA website and portals. There are fake sites out there trying to scam people, especially around phone number changes. Always double-check the link before entering any personal info. If you're having trouble checking your SRD status or updating details online, the safest bet is just calling them directly or going in person. It might take longer, but at least you know it's legit.
