China replaces Japan to become Australia's largest source of car imports | Overseas Expansion · Automotive
【Caixin.com】 Chinese automakers are sprinting and making rapid inroads into overseas markets. Data from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) shows that this year in February, China first became Australia’s largest source of car imports, ending Japan’s long-standing lead since 1998.
That month, Australia sold 22.3 thousand vehicles from China, accounting for roughly 25% of the market; Japan and Thailand ranked next, with corresponding sales of 21.6 thousand vehicles and 19.4 thousand vehicles, respectively.
In the first two months of 2026, the top three car brands by sales in Australia are Toyota, Mazda, and Kia. Toyota’s sales declined year over year by 24.9% to 27.9 thousand vehicles; Mazda’s sales fell year over year by 13.9% to 14.7 thousand vehicles; only Kia’s sales increased year over year by 7% to 13.3 thousand vehicles.
