Just saw something wild that's been making rounds - apparently a major MAGA influencer account on X with hundreds of thousands of followers was actually being run by a White House staffer the whole time. This is peak sock account behavior.
So there's this account called Johnny MAGA that looked completely organic to most people. It was constantly amplifying Trump's Truth Social posts, attacking Democrats, pushing pro-administration content. During the 2024 election cycle especially, it was relentless going after Kamala Harris with pretty personal attacks. The account even pushed narratives around the Minneapolis incident after Renee Good's death, claiming ICE shot an innocent civilian. To the average person scrolling, it just looked like another passionate Trump supporter in the MAGA media ecosystem.
But here's where it gets interesting - according to Wired's investigation, the sock account was actually operated by Garrett Wade, a White House staffer working as a rapid response manager for the Trump administration. The guy was literally running this anonymous MAGA account to amplify the same White House messaging from his official position. Phone records and publicly available data connected Wade directly to the Johnny MAGA account, and sources confirmed the connection. Wade didn't respond to Wired's requests for comment, which honestly tells you everything.
This isn't even new territory. Using sock puppet accounts to create fake grassroots support has been happening for years. Fox News got caught doing this back in 2013 to counter online criticism. Then there was @BasedMikeLee - looked like an independent supporter of Senator Mike Lee until it turned out to be the senator's personal account the whole time.
What's interesting here is how obvious these sock account operations become once someone actually investigates. The coordination between the anonymous account and official messaging, the timing, the narrative consistency - it all points to the same person pulling strings. Makes you wonder how many other accounts out there are actually doing the same thing but just haven't been exposed yet. The whole point of a sock puppet is to make propaganda look organic, and that's exactly what was happening here.
