2026 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Conference Announces 21 Major Scientific and Technological Achievements

On March 29, 2026 Zhongguancun Forum Annual Conference was held in Beijing, featuring a special session for the release of major achievements. A total of 21 major scientific and technological achievements were unveiled, including “the high-energy synchrotron radiation source has been completed and put into trial operation,” “the world’s highest magnetic field fully superconducting user magnet,” and “the first discovery of the core disease-causing functional circuit in Parkinson’s disease.”

Zhang Dongling, Director of the Major Projects and Basic Research Department of the Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Commission and the Zhongguancun Administration, said at a press conference held that day that the relevant achievements collectively showcase the courage and strength of Chinese scientists as they move into the “uncharted territory” in the fields of basic science and frontier technology. A number of achievements have reached the international leading level. By adhering to a people-centered demand orientation, the value of science for the good of humanity is demonstrated, and inclusive outcomes support a better life for the people.

Pan Weimin, General Chief Engineer of the High Energy Photon Source project at the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that the High Energy Photon Source (HEPS) project officially started construction in 2019 and passed acceptance with trial operation in October 2025. Based on the core principle of “accelerating electron production light,” it can provide high-quality X-rays, explore the microscopic world in depth, and achieve comprehensive performance that is leading among international comparable facilities.

“First discovery of the core disease-causing functional circuit in Parkinson’s disease” was released by the Changping Laboratory and Henan Provincial People’s Hospital. Established in October 2020, the Changping Laboratory is a newly created national research institution, and its core office area is located in the Beijing Zhongguancun Life Sciences Park.

Liu Hesheng, Chief Scientist of the Department of Brain and Neurodegenerative Diseases at the Changping Laboratory, said that in terms of theoretical breakthroughs, for the first time internationally, the team revealed the fundamental disease-causing mechanism underlying Parkinson’s disease, confirming that its essence lies in a specific network impairment of the body cognition network. In terms of technological innovation, the team was the first internationally to achieve a major leap in neuroregulation for Parkinson’s disease—from “anatomical target points in the motor area” to “personalized body cognition circuits.”

Liu Hesheng said that the achievement has already steadily realized an industrial closed-loop. The relevant equipment and therapies independently developed by the team have been applied on a large scale in more than 60 hospitals nationwide, with over 3,000 patients treated cumulatively. The overall effective rate has exceeded 70%, achieving the leap from basic research to major clinical applications.

The current forum annual conference runs from the 25th to the 29th, with the annual theme of “deep integration of scientific and technological innovation and industrial innovation.” It features five major sections—forum meetings, achievements release, technology transactions, cutting-edge contests, and supporting events—more than 100 sessions in total, with over a thousand guests attending from more than 100 countries and regions.
