CLP丨600,000 households with low usage and other categories receive consumption vouchers. Lam Cheuk-ting: It's so hot that I feel dizzy, so I turn on the air conditioning.
CLP has been distributing a HK$100 consumption voucher for the fifth consecutive year to low-usage users who also qualify for discounted electricity tariffs for senior citizens. This year, around 600,000 households are eligible. In addition to encouraging energy saving, it is expected to boost business for merchants.
CLP’s Director of Corporate Development, Joanne Chong Wai-yin, said that Hong Kong’s economy is gradually showing signs of recovery, but with changes in residents’ consumption patterns, the retail and catering industries are still facing certain operating pressures. CLP hopes to stimulate the local business climate through the multiplier effect generated by the consumption vouchers, unlock consumers’ spending potential, and help accelerate economic development.
Lam Chiu-ying: “No one’s asked everyone that they mustn’t use air conditioning. To be environmentally friendly, there’s no need to risk your life to fight for it.”
The former director of the Hong Kong Observatory, Lam Chiu-ying, who has met CLP’s low-usage standards in recent years and received the consumption voucher, said this voucher is not only valuable in terms of money, because people who promote environmental protection—or who use less electricity in order to save the planet.
He believes, “If you can not use air conditioning, then don’t use air conditioning. No one’s asked everyone that they mustn’t use air conditioning. If it gets so hot that you feel dizzy, just turn it on, because being environmentally friendly doesn’t require you to risk your life to prove a point.”
Distributing over HK$330 million in vouchers over 5 years—trial of electronic delivery
Since 2021, CLP has been distributing HK$100 consumption vouchers to users with low electricity consumption or those who qualify for discounted electricity tariffs for senior citizens. It has distributed more than HK$330 million in consumption vouchers in total. This time, it is trialing electronic delivery. Eligible users who qualify for discounted electricity tariffs for senior citizens will continue to receive physical consumption vouchers by post.
The CLP consumption vouchers can be used for online shopping and at 4,000 merchants, including restaurants, bakeries, pharmacies, grocery stores, and social enterprise retail outlets, among others.
A person in charge of an ice-house restaurant said that over the years, they have seen many senior citizens using CLP consumption vouchers to dine at the store, bringing more foot traffic and additional revenue. On average, business turnover increased by 5% to 10%.
