I bought Tesla on belief before the price gave me enough evidence.
Now TSLA is down nearly 40% from its peak, and my position is clearly in loss.
I bought part of the way up because I believed in Elon Musk, Tesla’s long-term vision, AI, robotics and the possibility that the wider ecosystem—including SpaceX—could eventually create more value.
But belief is not the same as timing.
A strong story can still become a weak investment when valuation, execution risk and market expectations move against you.
The good news is that TSLA was only a satellite position in my portfolio.
That matters.
Because I did not treat one high-conviction stock as my entire future, this loss is uncomfortable—but not destructive.
My core portfolio is still built around diversified ETFs and broader asset allocation.
This is exactly why I separate positions into two groups:
Core holdings are designed for long-term stability.
Satellite holdings are where I accept higher uncertainty, stronger volatility and the possibility that my thesis may take years to work—or may not work at all.
I am not going to pretend this trade was perfect.
I entered partly because of conviction in the person and the story, not purely because the valuation and price structure were ideal.
That is something I need to admit.
Maybe Tesla will eventually benefit from AI, robotics, autonomous driving or deeper cooperation across Elon Musk’s companies.
Maybe the market will revalue it again.
But “maybe” is not a risk-management plan.
For now, I will not blindly average down just because the price has fallen.
I need to reassess:
• Is the original business thesis still intact?
• Is revenue and cash flow improving?
• Is valuation becoming reasonable?
• Is the chart showing real accumulation rather than continued weakness?
A loss does not automatically mean the thesis is dead.
But conviction should never become an excuse to stop thinking.
This position hurts, but because it was sized as a satellite holding, it remains manageable.
That is the difference between being wrong and being destroyed.
