GOOGL Earnings Beat But Stock Drops 3 Percent On AI Capex Jump
Alphabet just printed a strong Q2 but shares fell about 3 percent after hours and the reason is clear: AI spend is rising faster than even bulls hoped.
News now: Total revenue came at 119.8B versus 116.9B guess, up 24 percent year on year. EPS printed at 9.11 versus 2.88 guess but that included a 6.26 gain on equity holdings like SpaceX and peers. On clean basis EPS was 2.85 versus 2.88 guess, a tiny miss. Google Cloud was star with 24.8B up 82 percent versus 64 percent guess. Ad revenue was 81.6B versus 81.1B guess. Search was 63.3B versus 63.4B guess, near line. YouTube ad rose 13 percent to about 11B. Gemini now has 950M monthly users.
Why stock dropped: Capex. Quarter capex was 44.9B up 101 percent year on year and free cash flow turned negative at minus 5.9B for first time in firm history. Finance chief said firm now sees full year capex at 195B to 205B versus prior 180B to 190B. She said demand still outpaces supply and faster delivery of capacity drove hike. That 15B bump spooked traders. Cloud backlog jumped to 514B from 460B but needs data hub build to turn into revenue.
Market effect: GOOGL closed near 341.91 then fell to about 331.91 after hours. Dow and Nasdaq futures eased a bit as well. Chip names held firm on AI hope, while software lagged. For tech, Alphabet set tone: Cloud growth is real but price to win AI is huge. If Google must lease data hub space from peers, margin may feel pinch. That mix of strong top line plus rising cost is why market sold.
Logical view: Cloud growth of 82 percent shows AI demand is real. Enterprises pay for AI workloads. Yet to meet that demand, Google must pour cash into chips, power, and build. Negative free cash flow is not fatal for a cash rich firm but it shows trade off. If AI capacity comes online fast and backlog turns into billings, spend may pay. If chip cost stays high and model delay talk stays, payback may take longer.
Real idea: For investors, watch three gauges: Cloud growth and margin, capex and free cash flow, and Gemini traction. If Cloud stays above 60 percent growth and backlog holds, bull case stays. If capex keeps climbing past 200B and free cash flow stays red, bears get ammo. For crypto, AI spend talk matters because it sets risk mood for tech. Big AI spend with soft PPI and CPI can still be ok for risk if market sees growth ahead.
Bottom line: Alphabet beat on revenue and Cloud but raised capex to 195B to 205B and printed first negative free cash flow. That combo pushed stock down about 3 percent after hours. Beat was real but cost of AI win is now the story.
