An 8-Year Grudge Match: Germany’s Shocking Loss Screws Over South Korea

Who would have thought that Germany, which was beaten by South Korea and eliminated in the group stage eight years ago, wouldn’t even face South Korea this time, yet managed to push the Koreans to the brink of elimination with a perfectly timed 1–2 loss.

In the final Matchday of Group E at the 2026 FIFA World Cup (hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico) on June 26 Beijing time, Germany, which had already secured top spot, surprisingly lost 1–2 to Ecuador. This seemingly meaningless upset directly pushed South Korea, which had just lost its match in Group A, out of the safe zone for qualification.

Just two minutes into the match, Germany got off to a dream start: Wirtz picked up the ball in midfield and played a through pass, Sané broke the offside trap and slotted a shot into the far corner. German fans had barely finished spamming the livestream with “Already qualified, just padding stats, what a treat” when Ecuador answered back in the 9th minute.

Angulo picked up the ball at the edge of the box, with no German defender close, and unleashed a powerful shot that curled into the top-left corner. Neuer dived but couldn’t reach it, and the score became 1–1 in an instant.

In the second half, Germany briefly saw hope of taking the lead again. Musiala was brought down by an Ecuadorian defender in the box, and the referee immediately pointed to the penalty spot. Ecuadorian players immediately swarmed the referee to demand a VAR review.

The replay showed that Sané had first tugged the jersey of the Ecuadorian full-back while receiving the ball and advancing. The referee overturned the penalty decision, and the German fans’ comments instantly filled with “This script is all wrong.”

In the 78th minute, Ecuador earned a corner. They played a short corner and crossed it into the box, where Plata cleverly poked the ball past Rüdiger to score. The score remained 2–1 until the final whistle.

Germany brought on a few substitutes to press for an equalizer in the remaining ten-plus minutes, but they couldn’t change the score.

After the match, Germany coach Julian Nagelsmann said in an interview that the team had fielded its strongest lineup, but they lacked clinical finishing. The loss did not affect the team’s qualification rhythm.

A quick calculation shows how harmless this loss was: Germany had 6 points from two wins and one loss, topping Group E on head-to-head results over the other two teams. Losing this match only cost them some goal difference, and in the knockout stage, they might even avoid stronger opponents. In terms of both substance and face, they didn’t lose much.

On the other hand, Ecuador, the winner, got a huge windfall. With 4 points and a goal difference of 0, they narrowly advanced to the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams, and incidentally broke their 13-year curse of not beating a strong European team.

The trouble was for South Korea, sitting in Group A.

In the final round of Group A, South Korea lost 0–1 to South Africa. After three matches, they had only 3 points and a goal difference of –1, so they could only wait for results from other groups as a third-place team.

Originally, based on previous qualification point thresholds, South Korea’s probability of advancing was as high as 94%. But Ecuador’s 4 points raised the third-place qualification barrier from 3 to 4 points, instantly dropping South Korea’s chance to 37%.

South Korean media directly criticized the team after the match, pointing out that they scored only 2 goals in three group matches, Son Heung-min was so tightly marked that he had very few shots, and the attack was utterly unimpressive. Now even their qualification is at the mercy of others.

This brings us back to the old grudge from eight years ago.

At the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia, Germany, the defending champion, was in the same group as South Korea, Mexico, and Sweden. After a draw and a loss in the first two matches, they were on the brink of elimination and had to beat South Korea in the final match to keep hope alive.

However, South Korea defended deep and counter-attacked throughout the match. Kim Young-gwon scored a scrappy goal in the second half, and Son Heung-min sealed a 2–0 win with a breakaway goal in stoppage time. For the first time in history, Germany failed to advance past the group stage at a World Cup. That defeat became a humiliation that German football carried for years.

That year, South Korea’s win also helped Mexico. Even though South Korea won but still went out, Mexico advanced on head-to-head results over South Korea. In effect, South Korea’s “disinterested outburst” indirectly sent Mexico into the knockout stage.

This time, the script was even more ironic. In the final round of Group A, Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3–0. South Korean media initially saw this as “repaying a favor” because if Mexico had lost to the Czech Republic, South Korea could have still finished third ahead of the Czech Republic even with a loss to South Africa. However, with Mexico winning, South Korea had to compare goal difference with other third-placed teams. And right on cue, Germany’s “ritualistic” loss in Group E dug the hole.

On South Korean forums, someone posted a complaint: “Mexico just repaid the debt from eight years ago, and Germany immediately stabbed us in the back with the cruelest blow.” The highest-upvoted comment below read: “Eight years ago, you beat the defending champion to death; now they don’t even need to face you; the standings have already settled the score.”
