Honestly, over the past few years, I’ve watched so many movies about cryptocurrency that I’ve started noticing patterns. Cryptocurrency and blockchain have become such popular topics in films that directors and screenwriters simply can’t ignore them. So I decided to put together a list of what’s actually worth watching.
Let’s start with dramas and thrillers. Crypto (2019) is a crime film about a Wall Street banker who uncovers a conspiracy involving money laundering and crypto. Tense and intriguing, though it slightly exaggerates the link between cryptocurrency and crime. If you want something lighter, Bitcoin Heist (2016) is a Vietnamese action film about a group of thieves hunting a cybercriminal. It’s like Ocean’s 11, but with bitcoins. Funny and exciting. And then there’s StartUp (2016-2018) — a TV series I watched binge after binge. The story of creating the digital currency GenCoin in criminal Miami. Seriously, if you’re a fan of crypto thrillers, this is a must-watch.
Now, documentary films — there’s genuinely a lot to see here. Trust Machine (2018) by Alex Winter goes deeper into how blockchain can reshape finance and charity. It’s not just about technology; it’s about potential. The Rise and Rise of Bitcoin (2014) tells the story through the eyes of early believers — miners, investors, and those who believed in Bitcoin when nobody even knew it existed. Very inspiring.
Banking on Bitcoin (2016) is a good starter movie about cryptocurrency for beginners. It explains the history, the pioneers, and the potential to disrupt the financial system. It also doesn’t forget about the regulatory obstacles that keep showing up. Bitcoin: Beyond the Bubble (2018) asks the question everyone asks — is it a speculative bubble or the future of money? There’s no answer, but it’s interesting to watch.
The Bitcoin Gospel (2015) takes a philosophical approach. Why do people believe in Bitcoin as a tool of freedom? Even Roger Ver is involved there. Crypto Race (2020) is interesting because it focuses on women in the crypto space and blockchain’s impact on different industries. A fresh perspective.
There are also crypto mysteries. Trust No One: The Hunt for the Crypto King (2022) on Netflix is a real story about QuadrigaCX CEO Gerald Cotten, who died leaving 250 million in inaccessible crypto wallets. Shocking and frightening at the same time. Decrypted (2021) is a satire about a government team searching for Satoshi Nakamoto. A black comedy, an unusual film about cryptocurrency. Open Money (2020) is a docuseries about Dragonchain and their battle with regulators. It shows the industry’s real problems.
So what should you watch first? If you’re new to crypto, start with Banking on Bitcoin — everything is explained clearly. If you want action, go for Bitcoin Heist or StartUp. For a deeper dive — Trust Machine or The Bitcoin Gospel. And if you like real stories — Trust No One will blow your mind. Honestly, each of these crypto movies is interesting in its own way. Which one will you watch?
